The major goal of this activity is to rehabilitate and ensure operation of up to 11 irrigation systems that will cover over 15 thousand ha of farmland in about 30 localities.
6 irrigation systems (Jora de Jos, Lopatna, Cosnita, Criuleni, Puhaceni, Roscani) are located in the Nistru River basin and other 5 (Chircani-Zirnesti, Blindesti, Grozesti, Leova de Sud, Cahul) are located in the Prut River basin.
The systems to be rehabilitated were selected by the Millennium Challenge Corporation depending on their efficiency in terms of economic rate of return.
This is for the first time that the Republic of Moldova implements such an activity, as no other international organization has invested so far in the irrigation infrastructure.
The rehabilitation of the irrigation systems will enable the agricultural producers to apply modern cultivation technologies, increase the agricultural production, increase threefold the incomes from growing fruit and vegetables, set higher prices due to available water for irrigation.
